A cyberdeck is the faithful companion of any cyberpunk hacker (using the term in its original positive meaning - more on this in a later post). Alas, Ono-Sendai is not (still) in business, so resourceful chooms have traditionally turned to self-assembled solutions. If you want a source of inspiration, this (Hack In Style With This Fallout Cyberdeck | Hackaday) is my favourite post-collapse device.
I know, it’s not exactly the easiest task. The “brain” is probably the simplest part to choose (any Pi will do), after that you have to code your apps in C-like or Pyhton-like environments, solder something, maybe even 3D-print a case.
If making stuff is not your thing, there are some alternatives. Some cyberdeck-ish basic devices like uConsole (https://www.clockworkpi.com/home-uconsole). And many Steam Deck clones that, I guess, a clever choom can hack for more generic hacking tasks.
Anyway.
My question is: have you ever tried to make your own cyberdeck? If so, with which results? If not, is it something you’re wondering? Or it’s defintely not in your ballpark?
