The maker of the Pirate box has updated the functionality for a new and responsive design for piratebox that is easier to install, and run for offline wifi filesharing.
So this got me all excited as I thought it might be a use for my 2012 Raspberry Pi model B. I missed the original Piratebox craze but better late than never.
Unfortunately, like everything in the world of computing, Shareboxx recommends a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5, which is considerably more powerful than my old rig. Maybe I should just dig out an old Piratebox, but I always feel like projects die for a good reason, and there must have been enough issues to stop its popularity.
I’ll keep looking for a superlight captive portal or Shareboxx lite that will run on a decade old Pi and allow me to carry as small package of rebellion on the back of my bike!
Woah a project like that sounds like a cool idea for a raspberry pi zero w to carry with you everyday in a backpack, to give the people around you the opportunity to pirate some stuff. Mean it doesn’t need to handle much simultaneous connections, so I think a zero w should be able to handle it.
I don’t really know how to code, but I’d like to use it as a read only archive for zines in a physical space. Worse case they get downloaded, no big, but I like this idea of temporary and on location digital things.
after some trying, the 0 is probably bad for trying to get this working, but works mostly with the 4 and 5. The amount of compute and resources needed for compiling code from source is more resource intensive, and bogged down my pi 3 pretty badly.
