Feedback Requested: Federate Totentanz Or No?

Back in September '23 we posed the question of whether or not we should federate Totentanz.

Well, this topic came up again and the Discourse plugins have advanced a fair bit since then (I’m sure), but I wanted to ask all y’all members of the Big T if you would prefer that Totentanz remain isolated (like an old school BBS) or whether you’d like it federated with the Fediverse via ActivityPub (and probably primarily through CortexCom).

Feel free to discuss it if you’d like, but I’m really just taking a straw poll here to gauge everyone’s current feelings about it.

If you would like to see Totentanz federated, react to this post with :+1: .

If you want it to remain isolated, react with :-1:

Still doesn’t mean we’ll actually do it but if the overwhelming majority is interested, we’ll for sure start looking into it.

You summarized the reason for adding this feature back then as:

What has changed since the original post that caused the topic to resurface? Why was the idea dropped back then?

And what is the desired outcome of doing this? What specific problem is being solved?

Somebody saw that there was an ActivityPub plugin and asked if we were going to install it. IIRC, the idea was dropped back in the day because the plugin was lacking some features and because it seemed like a lot of people liked the fact that Totentanz isn’t federated and is self-contained. Plus, I think the mod team didn’t want to have to mess with all the moderation and such at the time.

I don’t think there’s specifically a problem being solved, but rather more one of just reminding people that Totentanz exists by enabling external cross-posting and commenting.

I think when I made that original comment that you quoted above, I was relatively new to the fediverse and was firmly into the “connect all the things” phase, and I think my personal feelings have changed in the year and a half since I wrote that.

I just wanted to see what Totentanzers thought about adding in AP integration, just because we can.

Now, I’m not involved in most of the other ecosystem here, but I like that it’s seperate.

I think I kind of prefer it as-is, but I will respect the will of the majority in any case.

Definitely isolated.
I’m a firm believer of the “the more people you have, the more jerks will appear” mantra.
But of course I’ll adapt to what comrades here will decide.

:-1: I’m gonna vote for keeping it isolated. For me, I prefer knowing what I’m getting when I go to a forum/BBS/etc in terms of topic and civility of community members. I’m all for growing the community, but I feel like having the isolation creates a good filter – it’s just a high enough barrier that people who aren’t really interested won’t bother.

p.s. There’s no :-1: reaction option in the post like/react menu.

ah…that is indeed an oversight on my part. I will endeavor to fix that for future “yes/no” reaction requests. Thanks for letting me know!
