B*KY Claims First Independent Instance

phil (@bad-example.com) Claims first non-fash-bar instance of ATProto

Neat! Still not going to bother with it, but neat.

Same here, but it at least shows that it is possible given sufficient resources. I still don’t think it’s going to scale enough to be meaningful in terms of moderation etc., but it’s a proof-of-concept at least.

It’s an interesting proof of concept and it shows that, yes, you could use the fash protocol for your own stuff. But I don’t see any big future beyond this.

And what’s interesting about this is that it’s still not all completely hostable (nor hosted, in this case) by a single individual. The Blacksky project has been going on since almost the beginning of Bluesky’s public phase, and I still haven’t heard if they’re 100% complete yet.

But yeah, this shows that Bsky can be “self-hosted” given sufficient (and very significant) resources of both money and computing power (or really, storage space).

Until they figure a way to get that prohibitively expensive cost down, this is just an academic exercise in very much a “technology demonstrator” sort of way.

The main issue remains: why one should bother with ATP when ActivityPub is already here?
I mean, if you want to build another corpo network, it makes sense to complicate things. But normal people usually try to make their lives simpler.

The only response I have to that is that ActivityPub is here, but that the AP spec/standard is considered “complete” and is no longer being actively developed or enhanced. And the lure of people bothering with the AT protocol is because they were sold on the idea that AT was making up for some of the AP deficiencies and inherent problems of federation that still exist in AP-land.

But mainly people bother with ATP because they’re not technical enough to know the difference, and AT gives them more of the “Twitter feel” without having to learn the vagaries and cultural-shifts of the AP limitations. And to them, the simplest experience is “whatever replicates the ‘good ol days’ of Twitter without all the nazis and other ‘bad people’”.

That’s my supposition, anyway. It’s more about “convenience” as opposed to “simplicity”.
