I just got a new instrument called an oud. It's an old instrument, invented maybe 5000 years ago, but mine is new.

I am not a talented string/guitar/etc. player so I have no real expertise and an just learning it for fun. But it's a beautiful awesome instrument. I got it in Hollywood, there is a big Arabic music store right across from the theater where they film Jimmy Kimmel.

It sounds BEAUTIFUL and deep, when I'm not playing the wrong notes . It doesn't have frets so you have to be precise with your finger placement.

There was a local group years ago where I am where an oud was used. I think they were an Iranian duo. I'm excited for you. these things sound really nice

Ok but be gentle - I've literally had the oud for less than 24 hours at this point Good oud players can make all the notes sound even better!

Eventually I would like to learn all the different maqams, which are these unique scales that utilize half-flat/quarter tone/ "out of tune" notes even though the fifths and octaves are perfectly in tune. You get this sort of sour, ear bending vibe as you move around the scale . But that's not what this is
