Everyone loves colorful images on the internet. Me too. Normally, you'd use Pixelfed if you needed a federated image service. I tried that a while ago and couldn't get Pixelfed to work under NixOS. That's why pxvoid is now seeing the light of day on the web.

Image

NO BLOAT / EASY SELFHOSTING / FEDERATION READY
The goal of pxvoid is to be simple and easy to self-host. pxvoid consists of a Python base that handles photo uploads/deletion, federation, and gallery rendering. It also includes a database for photos, likes, and followers, and a small helper tool for user interaction. No multi-user instance, no messages, no filters, no shorts. Just images, likes, and follows. Currently, users with a Mastodon account (other Fediverse services are not yet tested) can follow the gallery and receive new uploads directly in their timeline. All favorites added via Mastodon also appear in the gallery.

STATUS:
pxvoid is currently in an early beta version. The basic functions are integrated and working, but a few details are still missing. A working prototype already exists online:

(but remember it's beta ;) )

The first code release for you to try out will be published soon. Perhaps someone will find it useful :)

I've seen some of your posts on Fedi about this, and it's definitely coming together! I like how simple and clean it is, and I'll be keeping an eye out for the beta drop. I've tried several self-hosted image galleries, and they all either seem to break after a while or are heavier than I want them to be (because they run in a docker image). A nice, simple python program that I can easily self-host seems like just what the doctor ordered!

Keep us posted, eh? :mrgreen:

I don't post a lot of images, but I do look at them. Hope your project brings more artists to the fediverse. :D

@SynAck:
Right now I'm cleaning up the code so that it only contains the bare minimum that's truly essential. I hope pxvoid doesn't break as quickly as others :D

I feel the problem with Docker. In the case of pxvoid, it's deliberately kept simpler. The Python base handles all the Fediverse actors, places the images in the gallery, and renders the website. In the end, it's just pure HTML and CSS that the visitor sees. So, as simple as possible for its scope and purpose. I'll post here when there's news.

@Buny:
Primarily, pxvoid is a purely selfish project for me because I couldn't get pixelfed to work and, in retrospect, found it too large and with too many features. I don't need a multi-user instance with a huge set of tools that I don't use. Of course, it's all open source, and if someone can make use of my bad code and if it results in more colorful, beautiful images on the internet, then I think that's great too :D

Our lauded leader in cyberspace even gave the OK for a pxvoid account on CI (if someone wants to follow 8-) ):

News: First code release!
Version 0.1 (beta) has been live on Codeberg since this morning.
(Attention! Beta! Make backups and if your server goes up in flames - it's your own fault ;) )
Feel free to play around with it and test whether it runs on other computers or only on mine :D
I would appreciate any feedback so that pxvoid can grow and improve.
Have fun with it!

Should I post new versions and changelogs here, or will that be annoying? I know it's just a small tool and probably nobody else except me is using it right now 😅
