The beauty of computing really only first hit me when reading about the old ideas. Sifting through Catb, or trawling through dead BBSes. Cyberia by Rushkoff. The Story of Mel. In a world where people want timber, there's something to be said for keeping bonsai.
If you're not familiar with the work of 100rabbits, or their lifestyle, you should learn about them. If you're here, then you likely see the glimmer of the old net still, and I think this article is something you'd appreciate.

That was a really cool article - thanks for sharing that! Being one of those that does remember "the olden days" of computing, this writeup does a pretty good job of capturing the culture, mystery, and fun that made computers so exciting back in the day. I hadn't really thought as much about how UNfun computing has become recently in those concrete terms, but seeing it articulated in this manner was like a breath of fresh air and gave words to my inner thoughts.
I miss the days when computing was fun because it wasn't a forced requirement of living and existing in a society. I also miss the days of building one's own computer from the ground up; I know that people can still do that these days, but it's a lot harder (and more expensive) than it used to be, and somehow it's not nearly as fun. The culture has changed in fundamental ways that make almost everything related to computing seem like a chore.
This was a good trip down memory lane as to what made things fun.

I'm so happy someone will remind me of 100rabbits whenever I forget about them. They are so good at being quiet and methodical until they make their splash with whatever thing they are cooking up.
